RESOLUTION SUPPORTING CATHOLIC CHARITIES IN THEIR CAMPAIGN TO REDUCE
POVERTY IN AMERICA
WIIEREAS, in September of 2006, Catholic Charities USA unveiled a policy paper titled `Poverty in
America: A Threat to a Common Good,' at their annual meeting in Saint Paul and Minneapolis; and
WHEREAS, as an outgrowth of the policy paper, Catholic Charities USA is preparing to launch a multi-
yeaz, multi-faceted `Campaign to Reduce Poverty in America,' which is centered on reducing poverty in
the United States and encompasses the following goals:
• Reduce poverty in the United States by 50 percent by the year 2020
• Call upon the government to do more in funding and programs to help the poor and strengthen
and support families
• Educate policymakers and the public about the struggles of those living in poverty and the good
work of those who serve the . in local communities
• Engage those who are most s�=ected by government policies to be active participants in
developing solutions to reducing poverty
• Work with individuals and organizations, across the country to address poverty in our county; and
WHEREAS, issues surrounding poverty have long since been of focal concern and importance to the
City of Saint Paul which has lead to such initiatives as the creation of the City of Saint Paul/Ramsey
County Homeless Advisory Board which is cunently working on a plan to end homelessness,
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of Saint Paul hereby lends its sincere
support to Catholic Charities, both nationally and locally, in their `Campaign to Reduce Poverty in
America.'
