If this information is true we hope that you will work with your city to remove the graffiti as soon as possible. Graffiti vandalism is associated with youth street gangs and misdirected youths known as"taggers"who think of graffiti as art. In reality it is criminal damage to your property. One of the best means to combat graffiti is to remove it as quickly as possible, thereby denying taggers their art and their territory. We ask that you take the following steps: 1. If you have not done so,please file a vandalism report with the police. Call 291-1111. 2. If you wish to remove the graffiti yourself please consult the attached suggestion sheet. 3. If the damage is extensive consider filing a claim with your insurance company. Take pictures for documentation. Tell your insurance agent that the city requires quick removal of the graffiti. 4. If you need help with graffiti removal the city does have a graffiti removal program that provides free assistance. Please call 487-4657 to apply for this assistance. You must sign a request/waiver form to obtain this free assistance. Please understand that graffiti can be difficult to remove. The process of removing or covering up the graffiti may leave the repaired area looking different from untouched areas. In some cases you should consider having your insurance company pay for more extensive repairs. A City Code Enforcement Inspector will check your property sometime after the postmark on this notice. If graffiti is still present the inspector will issue a formal order to you to remove or cover the graffiti by a certain date. If the graffiti is not removed by the deadline date the city will send a work crew to remove or cover the graffiti. The cost of this work will be levied against your property in the form of a special tax assessment. The costs are billed at a minimum rate of$225 per hour. In summary, you must take steps to remove or cover the graffiti on your property. You should file a police report, remove the graffiti yourself, or have your insurance company remove the graffiti, or grant the city permission to remove it for free. If you fail to take action and do not respond to formal orders to remove or cover over the graffiti, the city will remove the graffiti and assess the cost of removal as a tax lien against your property. If you have questions please call the Citizen Service Office at(651)266-8989.
