THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAINT PAUL DOES ORDAIN: S ect ion 1 That Section 20.17 of the St. Paul Legislative Code be and � the same is hereby amended by adding G�bsection 2 as foll�aa�,� � Subsection Z - Appliances on Roofs a. General - In addition to the other provisions of this chapter, roof mounted appliances shall conform to the following: (1) Appli�.nces shall be designed to withstand atmospheric and climatic conditions. (2) Roofs on which appliances are to be installed shall be capable of supporting the additional load or shall be reintorced to support the additional load. (3) All access locks, screws and bolts shall be corrosion resistant material. b. I�nstallation _ _ ' (1) Appliances shall be installed in accordance with their approval listing and in accordance with the manufacturer' s installation instruction. (2) Appliances shall be installed on a well drained surface. At le�st Six (6) feet clearance shall be available between the appliamce and the edge of the roof or similar hazard. When this clearance cannot be provided, rigidly fixed rails or guards at least three �3) feet �n height shall be provided on the exposed side except that parapets at l�ast three (3) feet in height may be used in lieu of rails or guards. (3) Each appliance shall have an accessible cl-isconnect switch and 110-120 volt AC grounding type convenience outlet on the roof adjacent to the appliance. The convenience outlet shall be on the supply side of the disconnect switch. (4) When water stands on the roof at the appliance or when the roof is of a design having a water seal, a platform or walkway or both shall be provided above the water line. Access to Appliances (1) Access to appliances located on roofs or other elevated locations shall be provided. (2) Permanent au�tside access ladders may be used in single story buildings not exceeding twenty (20) feet in height from grade. Fixed ladders shall be either the step through or the side step type. (3) On buildings of more than one story and single story buildings exceeding twenty (20) feet in height from grade, an inside means of access to the roof shall be provided. 'I�he inside means of access shall be a permanent or fold away inside stairway or a ladder having an angle not exceeding sixty (60°) degrees from the horizontal. Scuttles or trap doors shall be at least twenty-four (24) inches by thirty-six (36) inches in size and shall ogen easily and safely under all conditions, especially snow conditions, and shall be constructed to permit access from the roof side unless deliberately locked on the inside. At least six (6) feet clearance shall be pravided between the access opening and the edge of the roof or similar hazard. Rails or guards may be provided as in paragraph b above. �- (4) Proper permanent lighting shall be pronid�d at the roof access. Switch for such lighting shall be located inside the building or near the access means leading to the roof. d. Protection from the weather shall be provided by either the design of the appliance itself or by an enclosure. If an enclosure is provided, it shall permit easy entry and movement and shall be a reasonable height and have at least two (2) feet of clearance on either side of the service access panel of the appliance. Section 2 This ordinance shall take effect and be in force thirty (30) days from and after its passage, approval and publicatiQn.
