injuries are the number one puse of death for children between the ages of one and fouReen, and
Whereas, unintentional injuries occur from fire and bums, bike crashes, pedestrian crashes, choking,
fai{s, unintentional fireartn discharge, poisonings, drowning and moYor vehide crashes, and
Whereas, Risk Watch, a comprehensive injury prevention curriculum has been developed by the
National Fire Protection Association and piloted in St. Paul to address these injuries, and
Whereas, Risk Wafch has proven io be an effective way to reach a large number of school age children
with safety messages, and
Whereas, the Department of Fire and Safety Services (DFSS) has adopted injury prevention as a public
education goal, and has expertise in the dissemination of school-based safety curriculum programs, and
Whereas, DFSS plans to disseminate Risk Watch throughout St. Paui, and
Therefore, Be It Resolved, that the DFSS be grented the authority to solicit funds from various businesses,
civic groups and foundations in order to effectively implement the Risk Watch program.

Unintentionai injuries are the number one cause of death for children ages one to fourteen. A comprehensive
injury prevention curriculum has been developed by the Nationai Fire Protection Association and piloted in
St. Paul that is designed to teach injury prevention skills. A young Southeast Asian boy was struck and killed
in St. Paul in November, 1997, and a fifteen-year old girl was struck by a truck on November 29, 1997.

Children and parents will learn skills in order to prevettt injuries.
