WHEREAS, the Division of Parks and Recreation is eligible to receive funding from the
Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission (MASC) for sports and recreation programs of benefit to
youth;and
WHEREAS, MASC, via the State General Fund, provides funds to assist polirical
subdivisions of the State of Minnesota for the development of youth sports and recreation
programs; and
VJHEREAS, City Council resolution #97-1546 authorized the Division of Parks and
Recreation to apply for fund3ng from MASC; and
10 WHEREAS, the Division of Parks and Recreation applied for and was awarded a$5000
11 MASC "Mighty Kids" grant to augsnent and expand an existing ski lesson and equipment rental
12 program for youth; and
13 WI�BREAS, upon project approvai the City of Saint Faul must enter into a formal
14 contract with MASC for the specific purpose of augmenting and expanding an existing youth ski
15 lesson and eyuipment rentai program; and

expense of 1) replacing 40 sets ofi outdated youth equipment ineluding skis, boots and poles, and 2) purchasing 35
additional sets of youth equipment. -

Acceptance of this funding will allow the cross country ski lesson and rental progrem to expand beyond its current
location at the Como Park Ski Center to the Phalen Golf Course. Additional schools, recreation centers, community
education programs a�d community groups will gain access to the program, thereby enabling it to better achieve its
two objectives:
L To introduce as many children as possible to cross country'sk'ring; and
2. To show that cross country skiing is a fun and lifelong activity for any child or adult.
