98-337Council File # ��� Green Sheet # �� � RESOLUTION �11NT PAUL, MINNESOTA Presented Refened To CALLING FOR A GREEN SUMMTI' Date 2 WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul understands the effects of global warming and respects our natural resources; 3 and 4 WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul City Council recognizes the impact that energy efficient products have in both 5 protecting the environment and reducing energy costs; and 6 WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul has been recognized nationally as a leader in recycling; and 7 WHEREAS, in the City of Saint Paul there will be more than 30,000 trees and shrubs planted along the Mississippi 8 River by the year 2000, thereby sequestering carbon, stabilizing topsoil, and expanding wildlife habitat; and 9 WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul has redeveloped more than 103 acres of brownfields whereby providing living 10 wage jobs and cleaning up the environment; and 11 WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul has worked to reduce carbon monoxide by using fuel-efficient vehicles and 12 promoting public transit; and 13 WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul has worked to meet the quality standazds established under the Safe Water Act; 14 and 15 WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul desires to incorporate model uses of energy efficiency in buildings that either 16 the City owns, operates or provides financial suppoft, and; 17 WHEREAS, the Ciry of Minneapolis has similar interests in opera6ng their own buildings or in capital ventures the 18 City is involved; now therefore be it 19 RESOLVED, that the Cities of Saint Paul and Minneapolis desire to work together to hold a Green Summit, to 20 highlight what the two cities and other organizations and businesses have done in the area of climate change and 21 protecting the environment, and to discuss ways that energy efficiency and conservation may impact the way we 22 live, work, and recreate; and be it ������ 1 FLTRTHER RESOLVED, that Saint Paul City Council Reseazch is directed to staff the planning of the Green 2 Sumrnit with staff from the City of Minneapolis and for the first planning meeting to occur in May 1998, and the 3 Green Summit to be held in the falUwinter of 1998; and be it 4 Fi TR'I'HER RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council does hereby approve the acceptance of donations from 5 corporations and citizens to help defray the costs of the Green Summit.
