WHEREAS, the Division of Pazks and Recreation is eligible to receive funding from the
Mianesota Amateur Sports Commission (MASC) for sports and recreation programs of benefit to
youth; and
WHEREAS, MASC, via the State General Fund, provides funds to assist political
subdivisions of the State of Minnesota for the development of youth sports and recreation
programs; and
WHEREAS, Ciry Council resolution #98-534 authorized the Division of Parks and
Recreation to apply for funding from MASC; and
WHEREAS, the Division of Parks and Recreation appiied for and was awarded a$2,500
MASC "Mighty Kids" grant to pay for track and field fees at Martin LuffieT King Recreation
Center: and
13 WHEREAS, upon project approval the City of Saint Paul must enter into a formal contract
14 with MASC for the specific purpose of defraying track and field expenses for Martin Luther King
15 Recreation Center which will enable the Center to foster the development of youth through the
16 sport of track and field; and

opportunities for the people in and around the Summit-University area of Saint Paul. The Center seeks to promote the
development of youth through the sport of track and field. The funding provided will be used to pay for several meet
registration fees during the spring and summer of 1999. This will allow the number of participants in the track a�d field
program to continue to increase by making it affordable and accessible.

promote track and field opportunities for youth; to provide children with a non-traditional "team" opporiunity; to teach

will help young people to develop healthy exercise and eating habits, and provide them with an opportunity to showcase
their talents and newly acquired skills.
