98-1029Council File # �oaq 0 R i G� NA L 0 i RESOLUTION Presented By Re£erred To Green Slieet # � � �� . �� Committee: Date VJHBREAS, The Titanic E�ibit will be the premier attraction in Saint Paul from January 1, through April 30, 1999, and; WHEREAS, The Titanic E�ibit will be held at the Saint Paul's Historic Union Depot concourse, and; WHEREAS, The Titanic Exhibit is pmjected to attract 600,000 attendees including families, students and tourists, and; WHEREAS, The economic impact within Saint Paul is expected to exceed $80 million dollars, and; WHEREAS, The Convention and Visitors Bureau has already published and distributed 40,000 hotel brochures, 10,000 direct mail postcards, 1,600 group tour post cards, 22,000 pre-promotional cazds, and; WHEREAS, The Convention and Visitors Bureau will be purchasing regional newspaper ads and radio ads, and WHEREAS, The Convention and Visitors Bureau also will be creating and staffing a visitors booth in Union Depot, and; WHEREAS, The Convention and Visitors Bureau has extensive knowledge in promoting Saint Paul's Restaurant and Hotel trades, and; WHEREAS, Saint Paul's Restaurant trade has specifically requested marketing assistance for this unique opportunity, and; WHEREAS, Due to the increased traffic generated by these marketing efforts, Saint PauPs Restaurants will see a dramatic increase in employment opportunities and higher wages for their current and future employees, and; WHEREAS, The Convention and Visitars Bureau estimates that additional marketing for Saint Paul restaurants would cost an estimated $20,000, for the expressed purpose of creating Titanic restaurant guides and assisting in the regional marketing of Titanic related parties and celebrations, and; WHEREAS, The Union Depot is a"new" exhibition venue for most of the anticipated visitors and may be difficult to locate and the Convention and Visitars Bureau recognizes the importance of directional signs, and; continued on page 2 39 40 41 42 43 44 45 46 47 48 44 50 51 52 53 54 55 56 ORlG1NAL qt�-(o�� Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, The city's light pole banner system has been found to be an effective guidance system for new visitors at snnilar events like America's Smithsonian, and; WfIEREAS, It is estimated that 601ight pole banners should not exceed the cost of $5,000, and; WHEREAS, the 1998 Joint Marketing Fund (050-36108-0299) contains sufficient fmancing and budget authority, and; WHEREAS, the Mayor recommends that the Joint Mazketing Fund provide $25,OQ0 to the Saint Pau1 Convention and Visitors Bureau for promotional services related to the Titanic e�ibit; Now therefore, be it RESOLVED, that the City Council approves the use of the Joint Mazketing Fund for up to $25,000 to support the Titanic Exhibit, and authorizes the proper city officials to enter into contracts, as necessary, to provide these services.
