To Whom It May Concern:
We hereby request reimbursement of $9,797 to cover repairs to our home I�
and replacement of our personal belongings that were damaged beyond the
$10,000 limit of our insurance policy with American Family Insurance.
Attached are lists of itemized damages and estimated repair costs due
to the city sewer back-up into our basement (1681 Saunders Avenue, St.
Paul) on August 7, 2012. Evidence indicates that the back-up was a
result of the smoke work done on the street by the contractor, S.E.H.
A video of our sewer line made by American Leak Detection (760-263-
7773) , as requested by our insurance company, indicated absolutely no
blockage from our house to the street at the time. The back-up
flooding occurred the same day and time of day when the contractor,
S.E.H. , was working on our street.
We have tried to estimate reasonable dollar amounts for replacement
items; we do not have original receipts. When possible, we have called
various services and suppliers to get accurate estimates for what is
needed. We are not including reimbursement for our time spent - hours
and hours cleaning and sanitizing, sorting, and disposing of
contaminated items (those not dealt with by ServiceMaster) along with I
the phone time and paperwork spent dealing with this problem. �

Attached with the list are photos of most of the items, as well as
photos of the overall basement. According to our understanding, our
insurance agency, American Family Insurance, is submitting a claim for
their $10,000 responsibility on the structural damages to our home. �
We would really appreciate as quick a response as possible so we can
get our household back in order. As a teacher of St. Paul Public
Schools, I have run out of time to work on this.

I had a few friends (3) over at the house. They ended up leaving at around 1 a.m. and at that
time, there were no concerning sights or smells. Granted, we didn't go to the basement, but due
to the odor that was present later I would imagine we would have smelled any sewage seeping
into the carpet.
August 7`�'
In the morning, we discovered the basement carpet was soaked all the way through and it was
widespread. My friend was making his way down to the laundry room before leaving for work
mid-morning when he noticed the smell and squishy carpet.
I was at work and was unable to see for myself until around 2 or 3 p.m. at which point the smell
was disgusting all throughout the house. I had to open the windows and even that didn't do
much. I tested all the drains in the basement to see if the problem was a clogged
toilet/shower/sink drain but everything drained easily and normally. I contacted my parents in
Mexico, who said to go ahead and call the insurance company and get it cleaned up.
After filing a claim with American Family, I called Kurt Kelly (651-755-8734) from Service
Master to send out a team. When they arrived (around 6 or 7 pm), they informed me of how
much work they had to do and also told me that after hours they charged significantly more. So I
decided to set up an appointment with them the next morning to have them take care of the
damage.
August 8`h ',
Around 10 a.m. I called the company doing the testing (S.E.H.) and got a hold of the Project
Leader - Spencer (651-238-0572). He was very understanding and suggested I speak with the
City of St. Paul because he had never seen anything like that, and that when they did our testing
everything seemed normal (smoke came out of the vent at the top of our house). They were
doing testing a few blocks away and actually took the time to come over and meet me face to
face and talk about what happened. Again, they were blown away by something like this
happening and said if they had their camera crew with them, they would happily inspect the
pipes (I said I would contact them if that was necessary).
I spoke with the city sewage head - Alex (651-266-9850) and he was shocked by what happened.
He thought it might have been the tests being done, but offered to send out a city inspector as
soon as possible (the range was that afternoon or the next morning). The inspector did end up
coming that afternoon, around 3 or 4, and spent about 15-20 minutes poking around the manhole
before approaching me at the house and telling me everything was fine on their end. He gave me
a diagram of where the pipes were, but didn't really explain anything. 1 asked for his name so I
c�uld verify with the insurance company if need be, which he reluctantly gave me(Mike).
Later on that day, Joe Cieminski (612-360-8955)from American Family stopped by to look at '
the damage. He too seemed floored as to the amount of water, saying that it would be pretty hard
for a clog to have flooded that much, and that it was definitely sewage water, not just grey water.
ServiceMaster began work cleaning and removing all of the damaged property, carpet and
h�ttom 12 inches of the walls. They left fans and a dehumidifier for a few days to remove all of
the moisture. My parents were home by then and took over handling the project after that.
