97-1402Council File # Green Sheet # a Presented By: Refened To: MINNESOTA Committee: Date �� WHEREAS, Carbon Monoxide (CO} is a co{orless, odorless gas that is a byproduet of combust+on, and WHEREAS, CO is a highly toxic gas which is termed a toxic asphyxiant, meaning it reduces the oxygen transport properties of the blood, and WHEREAS, CO was responsible for 47 deaths and approximately 20,000 severe poisionings nationwide, and WNEREAS, The Saint Paul Department of Fire and Safety Services provided emergency response to approximately 500 carbon monoxide (CO) calls from citizens in 1996, and WHEREAS, the citizen's CO detector can not always be reset, and the citizen would then be left without a working CO detector, and WHEREAS, the Department of Fire and Safety Services plans to begin a CO detector loaner program for those citizens who would be left without a working CO detector, and NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Department of Fire and Safety Services be granted the authority to solicit CO detectors from the Kidde Safety Company for this loaner program. As the Fire Department provides emergency response to approximately 500 Carbon Monoxide calls per year, the citizens can benefit from participation in this program.
