97-1284Council File # �1— {�¢t� Green Sheet # G d G S,t RESOLUTION CITY Presented Referred To Committee Date � 1 WF�REAS, Saint Paul Public 5chools District 625 was established in 1965 as an independent school district; and 2 WF�REAS, eniightened state and municipal officials, at that tune, felt that our children's education was too 3 important to be a side issue of city government; and 4 WHEREAS, over the past tluxry-two years, the City of Saint Paul and Independent School District 625 haue found 5 numerous opporhuiiries to work cooperatively in the interests of Saint Paul's children; and 6 WHEREAS, an independentiy elected School Boazd gives the public more direct accountability over the operation 7 of the public schools; and 8 WHEREAS, efforts are being made to remove the independently elected School Board; 9 TF�REFORE, BE IT ItESOLVED, that the City of Saint Paul officiaily opposes any effort to eliminate Independent 10 School District 625; and ll BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City of Saint Paul officially opposes any effort to merge Independent 12 School District 625 with the City of 5aint Paul; and 13 BE IT FINALLX RESOLVED, that both of these posifions become a part of the City's legislative priorities for the 14 19981egislative session and that this position be communicated to our legislarive delegarion.
