Scholarship Review Committee
I first became acquainted with Mr. James Counts, Jr. in May of 1994.
James had applied and been accepted for the residence program at Courage
Center. Courage Residence offers Independent Living Skills training for
people with physical and sensory disabilities. During 1994 the average
length of stay was 10 sonths. Mr. Counts completed his rehabilitation
program in 6 months. James was able to take full advantage of the
information and reaources available to hi.m. Further, he was able to app2y
what he had learned to his benefit.
(612)5&6-0811 As a vocational rehabilitation counselor, I see a great number of people
Far(672)520-0577 and many are able to benefit from rehabilitation foLlowing a spinal cord
TTY (612) 520-0245 injury. Mr. counta is one of those rare people who, even a year and a
half later atands out.
Mr. Counts vocational goal is to pursue a career in social work after
majoring in social work and political science. Toward this end he was
ale to arrange an internship with the Adult Day Program at Courage
Center. James campleted a two month internship in July of 1995 under the
supervision of Michelle Brandes.
Following the completion of his internship, Mr. Counts was gracious enough
to return as a guest speaker for the spinal cord injury work skills group.
We asked Mr. Counts to share his insights and experience as a student with
experience in accessing support services for students with disabilities.
James gave a very well prepared and well received hour long presentation.
He effectively ovtlined the support services available and those he deemed
neoeasary foz successful participation in the classroom and as a college
student.
As a result of my association with Mr. Counts I have had the opportunity
to see him successfully participate in.rehabilitation, establish a new
career direction for himself and be willing to serve as a role model for
peers. He has done an 'outstanding job, demonstrating responsibility,
dependability, good judgement and insight. I am please to have been asked
to write a letter of recoa¢nendation for Mr. Counts. The combination of
3ames' experience, motivation, academic and personal skills sets him apart
from most students. I feel that he is most deserving of scholarship
monies and any opportunities that can be afforded him.
Sincerely,
l!f///.li.dG./

To Whom It May Concern:
It is a pleasure to write on behalf of Jim Counts. The staff of the Dean of
Student Life Office and I have had the opportunity to meet and work with
Jim since his transfer to the University of St. Thomas last fall. Jim is
currently a student employee in our office and has served in a variety of -
leadership and consultant capacities for our office throughout his time as a
student on our campus.
Jim has been a successful student, both in and out of the classroom at St.
Thomas. His GPA for this past semester was a 3.467 and a 4.0 scale. In
addition to his studies, Jim successfizlly meets the daily challenges of a family,
public transportation, and financially supporting his education. Even with all
the challenges of his daily life, he still manages time to volunteer at the
Courage Center, a local rehabilitation facility.
Jim has been the subject of several newspaper articles about his personal
challenges in life and as a person with disabilities. He has served as a mentor
to other persons with disabilities and as an example for all of us at St.
Thomas.
Sincerely,
Alan L. Sickbert
Dean of Student Life
