96-550Council File # 6 - �j � Green Sheet # g S j RESOLUTION NT,PAUL, MINNESOTA Presented Referred Date 1 WI�REAS, the Saint Paul City Council has made the commitment to the fi.irtherance of youth sports within the 2 City of Saint Paul; and WFIEREAS, Saint Paul, Minueapolis, the Meiropolitan Twin Ci6es, and the entire State of Minnesota haue become the "Hockey Capital" of the United States; and WF�REAS, the Twin Cities District of the Minnesota Amateur Hockey Associafion has been instrumental in the development and growth of youth hockey in Saint Paul; and 7 WHEREAS, the efforts of the Twin Ciries District have reached into the minority communities of Saint Paul to 8 afford minority children the opportunity to experience and excel in the sport of hockey; and 9 10 WF�REAS, the Mimiesota Amateur Hockey Association has appointed a"Redistricting Committee" to consider 11 various alternatives to reapportion the various local Hockey Associations throughout the State of Minnesota, with 12 a particular emphasis on the redistricting of the Metropolitan Twin Cities and surrounding areas; and 13 WIIEREAS, the Redistricting Coxnmittee is considering alternatives which would el'uninate theTwin Cities District 14 as a single entity and redistribute the various local Hockey Associations to other districts which do not have the 15 experience or background to work with inner city youth and their particulaz problems; and 16 WIiEREAS, the 3aint Paul City Council has strong feelings about the continuation of the Twin Cities District as 17 a viable tool within the City to foster all of the posifive aspects of youth development which the Twin Cities Dishict 18 has proven over the past nine yeazs to develop in the over 12,600 students who haue participated during that time. 19 NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Twin Cities District be commended for its efforts over the past nine 20 years in the continuing development of the abilities of Saint Paul youth to become better citizens through their 21 experience of the successes and failures of the sport of hockey. Leaniing how to lose, as well as how to win, is a 22 crucial skill for our youth, and that sldll is fostered in a positive atmosphere of youth hockey maintained by the 23 Twin Cities District. -2- P.2t�2 �� -sSo BE IT FUR1'HER RESOLVED that the Saint Paul City Council does hereby express to the Redistricting Committee of the Minnesota Ainateur Hockey Association their strong support for a redistdcting plan which will RETAIN THE EXISTING STRUCT[IRE OF THE TWIN CITIES DISTRICT in order to continue to afford to the youth of Saint Paul, as well as Minneapolis, the opportuuity to develop in the sport of hockey and to become better citizens for their involvement.
