PROJECT SUMMARY AND RESULTS: This project will restore the oak savanah ecosystem to a large portion of the river biuff in Indian Mounds Regional Park and a portion of Battle Creek Regional Park. I1. OUTLINE OF PROJECT RESULTS: A. Pre-settlement vegetation consisting of the oak savannah ecosystem wiil be reintroduced to 50 acres of the river bluff fine in Mounds Park, and to 29 acres in Battle Creek Park. B. Non-oak savannah trees, such as mapie, elm, and cherry, alang with shrubs and turf will be removed, and native prairie and woodland grasses and forbs will be re-introduced. C. Enough trees wilf be removed to reestablish the 10 to 80 percent canopy necessary to an oak savannah. D. Once the southern portion of the Burlington Northern traii, from East 7th Street to Warner Road is built, there wi(i be a connecting greenway, or natural corridor, that stretches from Mounds Park in the south, to Lower Landing Park to the west, to Phalen and Ke{ler Park in the middle, and stretching into the northern suburbs to the north, and beyond, using the Gateway trail as the connecting greenway. E. Increased and improved habitat for the endangered species Kitten-taiis (Wulfenia bullii). F. The invasion of these oak savannas by nan-oak tree species that are more shade tolerant and the introduction of exotic shrub species, such as European Buckthorn and sumac, has resulted in a decline in the total number ot plant and bird species present in these areas. Reestablishment of nativs vegetatio in these areas wiil thus result in an increase in both plant and bird species. lll, CONTEXT; A. Significance: ' The river bluffs of Mounds and Battle Creek Park are home to the endangered plant species, Kitten-tai{s (Wuifenia bullii}. According to "Minnesota's Endangered Fiora and Fauna", Kitten-tails is "only native to savannas, dry prairies, and open woods along river bluffs and terraces, specificafly where the three rivers converge in the Twin Cities area. Only about dozen sites are currentiy known to survive in Minnesota". Reestablishment and enhancement of the native vegetation in these areas wili help to ensure the survival oi this endangered pfant in its present iocations and wiil aliow for its growth into areas not presently inhabited by this endangered plant. A. Signiticance (continued): 9G-5 ' The natura4ly occurring eco4og+cal system in these areas has been altered by humans, the end to the fires that used to sweep through these areas has caused increased tree growth and allawed shrub growth to b(ock out the growth of the prairie grasses and forbs that used to form the ground cover in this ecosystem. The result is that the oak savannas that were origina(ly on these sites have become ctosed-canopy oak-maple forests +nstead. ' Biodiversity wilf be reintroduced to these areas. ' Properly managed, these areas wi(1 uitimately produce desirabie piant communities, with a greater opportunity for educational use. B. Strategy: O C. Time: Two Years D. Budget History; A.
