Committee Date
WHEREAS, Firestone, prior to being purchased by fareign-owned Bridgestone,
has a history of favorable labor relations with the United Rubber Workers; and
WHEREAS, Bridgestone is attacking American Bridgestone Firestone Workers by
trying to drive down wages, slash health care benefits, destroy safety protection,
and making 12-hour work shifts mandatory; and
WHEREAS, when American workers stood up to these unreasonable demands,
Bridgestone/Firestone permanently replaced them, and also brought in scabs from
foreign countries to replace the striking American workers, which is illegal in our
country; and
WI�REAS, the locking out of 4,000 American workers in five (5) American
communities has had a devastating impact on the workers, their families, and these
communities; and
WF�REAS, it is not in the public interest to spend public money to support a
foreign corporation involved in this type of corporate tenorism;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council go on record
in support of the Bridgestone/Firestone workers and that a copy of this resolution
be sent to the BridgestonelFirestone Corporate Headquarters and the United
Steelworkers of America; and
