1 WHERE AS, The City of Saint Paul, Como Zoo, wishes to donate one
2 (1) male, hybrid orangutan (Como Zoo ISIS No. 1440) that was born
3 on January 10, 1979 at Como Zoo, to the Los Angeles Zoo, Los
4 Angeles, California, and
5 WHERE AS, there is not adequate space available at Como Zoo and
6 still continue to participate in the American Zoo and Aquarium
7 Association's Orangutan Species Plan, through breeding of a pair of
8 purebred Sumatran orangutans Como Zoo has recently received from
9 the Audubon Park Zoo, New Orleans, Louisiana and the Metro
10 Washington Park Zoo, Portland, Oregon, respectively, and
11 WHERE AS, the above referenced male, hybrid orangutan, born at Como
12 Zoo, was placed on loan to the Los Angeles Zoo on December 14,
13 1994, has acclimated well to its new surroundings at the Los
14 Angeles Zoo, the Los Angeles Zoo has requested the City of St.
15 Paul, Como Zoo, donate said specimen to the Los Angeles Zoo, and
16 said specimen having no monetary value is hereby declared surplus
17 to the needs of the City of Saint Paul.
18 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the proper City officials are
19 hereby authorized and directed to execute a written agreement with
20 the Los Angeles Zoo, Los Angeles, California.

INITIATING PROBLEM, ISSUE. OPPORTUNITY (Who. Wirt. When, Where. Why):

Need to relocate an adult hybrid, male orangutan from Como Zoo as there is
not adequate space to properly manage a breeding pair of purebred orangutais,
currently received by Como Zoo, and the Zoo's remaining four hybrid
orangutans.
Due to a fire at the Philadelphia Zoo, If Parks and Rec. chooses, the orangutan can be sent
to that zoo instead of the Los Angeles Zoo.
ADVANTAGES IF APPROVED:
Como Zoo can participate in the American Zoo and Aquarium Association's
Orangutan Species Survival Plan for breeding of purebred Sumatran oranguta *s
and improve the recreational and educational value of the Zoo's orangutan
collection.
