WHEREAS, smoking-related disease and disability costs unpose a financial burden on NI'innesota's economy;
and
VJfIEREAS, children and teenagers constitute a disproportionately large share of new tobacco smokers; and
WHEREAS, studies have shown that increasing the price of tobacco results in decreases in consumption of
tobacco, especially among children and teenagers; and
6 WHEREAS, the Saint Paul Department of Public Health, among many other organizations, supports the
7 Smoke Free 2000s Tobacco Tax Initiative; and
8 WIIEREAS, the Smoke Free 2000s Tobacco Tax Initiative is focused on increasing the tobacco excise tas
9 which would result in reducing tobacco consumption, particularly among youth; raising revenues to fund
10 increased health care access; raising revenues to fund health promotion programs, including programs to
11 reduce or prevent tobacco use; and therefore be it
12 RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council will go on record in support ofthe Smoke Free 2000s Tobacco
13 Taa� Initiative.
