L INDS TROM AND OTHERS FOR THE VACATION OF HERS CHEL AVENUE FROM PORTLAND AVENUE TO ASR1AN'D AVENUE. TO THE COMMON 5OUNC IL OF THE CITY OF ST. PAUL: The undersigned, being all of the owners of property abutting on Herschel Avenue between Portland and Ashland Avenues, and also other persons residing in the vicinity of said street, respectfully petition your honorable body to vacate said portion of Herschel Avenue (a correct plat whereof is hereto annexed) for the following reasons: - l- Said street as now laid out, as far north as Selby Avenue, is only thirty (30) feet wide, and as shown by the plat a portion of it is sixty (60) feat wide making an unsightly jog. The property through which this street passes is suitable now and in the future will be suitable only for good residence property, by reason of which a thirty (30) foot street is an injury rather than a benefit to the property abutting thereon and to the surrounding property, particular-= ly so in this case, as Aldine Avenue, the first street east, has been laid out at a width of thirty (30) feet and has the main sewer in it and cannot be vacated, -2 This street has no southern outlet, but stops at Portland Avenue. The cost of opening this street to Summit Avenue on the south to a width of at least sixty (60) feet, would far exceed the benefit that would be deriveid from such opening and is impracticable, and in fact two applications have been made to widen Herschel Avenue north to Dayton Avenue, but the same has been refused by the Board of Public Works each time upon the ground that it was impossible to find any property sufficiently benefited, to pay for the land necessa- ry to widen the street, 4G -• XffigipcXX w 1 ak1 . if 4 10,4 • A -34 If this vacation should be granted, no lot situated in Xaft*iitaxa lutDt3cdAzitzgrasksttxxxexisimmikauxis txix the square thus wade would be more than 248 feet from Wheeler Avenue, or 269 feet from Aldine Avenue, and the entire block would be less than 600 feet, the usual distance of blocks in a large part of the best residence portion of our City, -4- The chief travel which this street can accommodate is to provide a route to residents, thereon to and from the Selby Avenue and Grand Avenue car lines . The vacation prayed for would not in- crease the distance any whatever to Grand Avenue as it is now necessary to go east to Aldine or west to Wheeler Avenue to reach said Grand Avenue car line, and as above indicated, the distance east to Aldine and west to wheeler Avenue from any lot after this vacation should be made, would not be unusual . -5- Your petitioners further show that if such vacation be granted as prayed for, A. A. Lindstrom will by appropriate conveyance grant and dedicate to the City that shaded portion of her land shown upon the plat to be 20 X 51 feet, for the purpose of a public alley, the same now being private property and never having been condemned for an alley, and thus save the City t e expense of opening the sane, and your petitionerHil also pay the cost and expense of this proceeding.
