To the Honorable Members of the Assembly
1
of the City Council
of St . Paul.
Mr . President and Gentlemen, -
We are opposed to the vacation of
the alley in Block 5., Dawson' s Addit ion to West St . Paul for the
following reasons:
We bought the property with the alley established,
with a fairly ;cod road to my barn, which I improved so that
three tons of coal could be 140,41E4 to the place= in one load,
without trouble . I used the alley road unmolested from 1904
until last year, when I was shut off with a stone wall and a • •
high fill up of dirt, cutting me off from the alley, without
any authority from the proper City Officers to do so . We
considered that alley right as much of a useful and essential
asset to our property as Ohio St . in front . To cut a drive-
way in from Ohio St . , through the high embankment and stone wall
will make an expensive proposition . Retaining walls would have
to be built and the driveway paved to prevent cave in and
washouts . On account of the steep grade , the plumbing would
have to be lowered (sewer, water and gas) . To use the barn
a driveway would have to go clear across the lot, besides to cut
in such a front as ours , disfigures property a great deal .
We are also considering building a house in the rear of the
lot a: d with a 16 ft . alley cutting Cherokee $e levard ;rsilxz
and Alice Park, the rear end of the lot would be just as desirable
to build a dwelling as the Ohio St . front . We admit,14e cannot ,
at present, get the necessary signers to have the alley graded,
but we contend we Pre enough to oppose the vacation of it,
without our consent and reasonable compensation. We feel our-
selves damaged and wronged,• and herewith appeal to the gentlemen
of the Assembly to do us justice and give us a square deal, the
same as the Board of Aldermen did, when they unanimously refused
to vacate the alley, after a seven months aggument before that
Body. We have sufficient confidence in the integrity of the
members of the Assembly to obtain full justice by their decision,
and I sincerely hope that this vexing controversy may be
settled amiably among all concerned.
i\ Very respectfull =
