The ventilation ducts are above the rated ceiling and can pose a hazard to the structural steel, if the ductwork is not fire-dampered at fire separation intervals. ADVANTAGES IF APPROVED: It is a less costly method of protecting the structual steel and it is required by code. DISADVANTAGES IF APPROVED: NONE DISADVANTAGES IF NOT APPROVED: The structural steel would have to be fire-proofed with a non-asbestos material, resulting in a higher cost.
