FOR HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CITY OF SAINT PAUL
WHEREAS, John Jun� Hoon Choi immigrated to Saint Paul with his family at the age of three, settling in Skyline Towers with
two hard-working parents who laid the foundation for his American Dream; and,
WHEREAS, 7ohn was not only a talented athlete growmg up, playing hockey, baseball, and evenmally golf, he also had a mind
for Star Wars trivia, which won him tickets on a call-in radio show, and a body that enabled him to both model during high
school and be a bouncer at a bar during college, no small feat; and,
WHEREAS, John's career got offto an auspicious start, working at Rax and at a dry cleaner's in high school, which clearly
paved the way for his acceptance to Marquette University where he excelled at psychology, honed his social skills, and
developed Students Enhancing Education, a meniorship and tutoring program for inner-city kids of color; and,
WHEREAS, upon graduation, John landed ajob at Kennedy and Graven, making partner in six short years, successfully
lawyering until he received a call from the newty-elected Mayor of Saint Paul and soon found himself appointed as Saint Paul's
City Attomey; and,
WHEREAS, John's dedication to serving people resulted in a wealth of accomplishments in neady every challenge he tackled,
leading the of5ce with integrity, legitimizing his employees with badges, and honoriog the office with plaques; a�d,
WHEREAS, John found himself embroiled in a variery of issues at the City, from those he was delegated, like leading the
community process of over 100 sometimes contentious meetings that led to the creation of the Human Rights and Eqaal
Economic Opportunity department and cachairing the selection committee for the next police chief, to those he brought on
himself, like civil gang injunctions, banning replica toy guns and forming a National Multi-City Litigation Working Group; and,
WHEREAS, one stanza is not enough to mention all of John's innovative diversion programs, like Driver's License Diversion,
which has enrolled over 500 Saint Paul residents, and Bad Check Recovery which has returned over $SQ000 to merchants, or
Yhe restorativejustice efforts John personally implemented, or the trai�ings he helped develop to reduce Obstructing Legal
Process attests by 30% and combat domestic violence through Saint PaaPs Blueprint for Safety;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the SaintPaul City Council, Mayor Chris Coleman, and City staffwill always
remember John's sense of humox and uniquz ability to bring people together; and said parties hereby thank him for his numerous
contributions to the City of Saint Pau] and wish him the best as he embarks on the next phase of his career.
