WHEREAS, The Commissioner S` Public- Works has reported, in accordance with
Section 53 of the City Charter, the existence of an emergency during the
period from November 16 to 30,. 1956, which rendered necessary the employ-
ment of certain employees of the Department of Public Works for more than
eight hours per day or forty hours per week in doing the following work:
Emergency street, building, sewer & bridge repair
Dispatching men for emergency work
Dispatching motor vehicles for emergency work
Operating equipment on emergency work
Emergency calls for sewer maintenance
Removing snow and ice from city streets
Tending fires at Asphalt Plant on Sundays & holidays
Emergency garbage pickup
Taking care of complaints at city yards

And WHEREAS, This emergency arose by reason of the following facts and
circumstances:
Necessity of answering all emergency calls, keeping streets
free from snow and ice, keeping fires at Asphalt Plant con-
tinuously, completing grading and paving plans, need for
grade profiles, completing sidewalk assessments, taking
complaints, keeping city equipment in good running condition,
inspecting local improvement jobs, overseeing inmates at
workhouse farm and completing payroll work.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED That the proper city officers are hereby authorized
to pay the employees who performed such work in accordance with the
provisions of the Council's salary ordinance, Ordinance No. 61+ 46.
