sear Sir:
On November 20, 195G, the City Council referred to/the Planning Board
for recommendation the attached petition dated October 16, 1956 of
seven residents on Hazel Avenue requesting that that portion of Hazel
(,:tending from Upper Afton Road to Lower Afton Road be re-named "Battle
Creek Road."
The Planning Board recommends that this request be granted for the
reasons specified in the applicant's petition. In making this re-
commendation, the Planning Board takes note of the existence of the
word "Battle Creek" as it pertains to an ungraded 50' street named
"Battle Creek Lane" which is located just west of Battle Creek Park.
The Planning Board has been advised that the applicants have discussed
this matter with the owner of the property and that he has expressed
acceptance of the proposal that Battle Creek Lane be re-named "Metcalf •
Lane." If this is done, the possibility of duplication of street names
will be minimized.
Therefore, the Planning Board recommends that both street name changes
be consummated simultaneously.

Honorable Mayor and City Council
Building
We, the undersigned resident property owners abutting that portion of
Hazel Avenue extending from Upper Afton Road on the north to Lower Afton Road on
the south, do hereby petition Your honorable body to re-name this portion of the
above-mentioned Hazel Avenue sC that it shall be designated "Battle Creek Road."
Because there is an interruption in the continuity of Hazel Avenue
between Upper Afton Road and Burns Avenue and because Hazel Avenue is not graded
south of East Third Street, some two blocks north of Hudson Road, we, the residents
of this area have found there is much confusion on the part of strangers seeking
addresses on Hazel Avenue which actually lie south of Upper Afton Road. Because
there is no major likelihood of the establishment of a continuous street which
would connect what are now two separate portions of Hazel Avenue, we feel that
the convenience of the general, lpublic would be best served if the portion of
Hazel Avenue lying south of Upper Afton Road were re-named so as to have an
identity separate from that portion lying north of Hudson Road.
We are of the opinioQ that the name "Battle Creek Road" is one which
will immediately suggest the general location of this street to those who are
familiar with the location of Battle Creek Park and``the Battle Creek ski slide.
In making this request, we are aware that there is presently a
dedicated but ungraded 50, street located adjacent to the west boundary of
Battle Creek Park extending from Upper Afton Road south for approximately one
block to Pullman Avenue. This 'ungraded street presently bears the name "Battle
Creek Lane." In discussing this matter with various City officials, the desir-
ability of re-naming this street so as to eliminate confusion resulting f

two streets in the same area bearing the name "Battle Creek" was brought to our
attention. This problem has been discussed with timer of the property abutting
what is nom "Battle Creek Lane" and he has expressed his approval of the idea of
re-naming "Battle Creek Lane" in the event that Hazel Avenue south of Upper Afton
Road is designated "Battle CreRek Road."
We, therefore, respectfully request the approval of this proposal and
that the necessary steps be token to accanplish this change.
Very truly yours,
