Department of Public Utilities
City of St. Paul, Minnesota
Dear Sir:
For some time past this office has received numerous requests and several
petitions have been filed requesting the extension of the Maria Avenue bus
service on Burns Avenue past its present terminus at Trunk Highway 61.
Because of the serious traffic hazard which would be encountered with buses
crossing the intersection of Burns Avenue and this highway, it has been con-
sidered impractical to make this extension. Traffic signals are now being
installed and are expected to be in operation some time this fall.
At a recent hearing of the State Railroad and Warehouse Commission, the re-
routing of certain bus lines in the easterly section of St. Paul was under
consideration, and this matter was brought to the attention of the commission.
Under date of July 31, 1957 the Twin City Rapid Transit Company has requested
approval of the extension of this line on Burns Avenue to White Bear Avenue;
on White Bear Avenue to Upper Afton Road; and on Upper Afton Road back to
Burns Avenue. This proposed extension of the Maria line is in conformance
with the requests of residents in that community. A resolution approving
this extension on the part of the city is attached hereto.
Under the revised routing of the East Side bus lines approved by the commission
which will become effective October 15, 1957, the Grand Avenue service is
divided equally on the East Side between the Maria Avenue line and the East
Third Street line. It was originally proposed that the Sunday service operate
on the Maria branch inasmuch as the East Third Street branch has never in the
past enjoyed Sunday service. The commission has received requests for Sunday
service on the East Third Street branch, and the company proposes to divide
the Sunday service equally between the two East Side branches of the line
similar to the weekday arrangement. In view of the fact that the East Third
Street line serves a population fully as great as the Maria branch, it appears
that this arrangement would be more equitable than to operate all Sunday service
on the Maria branch.

Dear Sir:
The attached request to the Minnesota Railroad & Warehouse
Commission contains two amendments to the recentLy issued
order for rerouting on the east side of St. Paul.
One is for an extension of service beyond the present terminal
on Burns Ave. This operation has been awaiting installation of
a semaphore on Highway 61, which is now being installed.
The other is in response to a request by the Commission to
consider the need for Sunday service on E. 3rd St. where none
now exists.
Your approval of the extended route on Burns Ave. to White
Bear Ave. to Upper Afton Road to Burns Ave. is requested.
