WHEREAS, In 1863, Pilgrim Baptist Church in St. Paul, Minnesota was fosmall5� oxganized b��
Reverend Robert T. Hickman and a group of escaped slaves fsom Boone County, Missouri. It was in
the same yeaT that President Lincoln's Emanciparion Pzoclamation freeing the slaves in tebel states was
signed into law; and
WHEREAS, after thxee long yeats of haxd effort to begin a new way of life, Reverend Hickman and
others were primarily responsible for this spiritual movement with theix fust service consisting of a
baptismal service on the shoxes of the Mississippi Rivex; and
WHEREAS, the chaxtex membexs of Pilgrim Baptist Chusch, consisting of Revexend Hickman, Fielding
Combs, Henry Moffitt, John Txottex, Giles Crenshaw, and members of theix families, tequested the
tnxstees of Fisst Baprist to intercede and puxchase a lot costing $200.00 on which they would build the
fixst chucch builcling located on Sibley neax Morris Stseet making Pilgtun Baptist Chuxch the oldest
African-American chucch in Minnesota; and
WHEREAS, The c�xent edifice located at 732 West Central Avenue was erected in 1886 at a cost of
$1200.00, and has since been the church building of Pilgrun Baptist Church, with a cotmzutted
membexship that has advanced many community efforts including the stazt of the Benjamin E. Mays
School, the St. Paul Urban League and the St. Paul Nr1ACP; now,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the Saint Paul City Council hereby celebrates Pilgrnn Baprist
Church's 146 years of rich history and legacy, thanks Revexend Chaxles Gill, Jx., curxent pastor and
Pilgrun's membexs £ox theix many yeaxs of steadfast service to the cirizens of Sauit Paul and to the
historic Rondo community, and declares Sunday, June 28, 2009 to be forevexmoxe known in the City of
Saint Paul as
