RESOLUTION

Presented by
WHEREAS, Mary Jo Rossini was raised in the Frogtown neighborhood with eight younger siblings --
seven brothers and one sister: and
4 WIIEREAS, Mary Jo started her educational journey at St. Agnes Elementary School and had a short term
5 at Matemity of Mary Elementary School before returning to St. Agnes to finish up high school; and
6
7 WHEREAS, Mary Jo made two major life decisions during her early years, first was the desire to teach
8 children, and second was in high school where she met a fine gentleman by the name of Bill Culbertson;
9 and
10
11 WHEREAS, Mary Jo continued her education at the College of Saint Catherine where she received a
12 Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education, after which she started her first teaching job at Matemity
13 of Mary School as a fifth grade teacher; and
14
15 WHEREAS, Mary Jo married Bill in August of 1965 and they were blessed with three fine children --
16 Mary, John, and Ann -- who have given them three grandchildren; and
17
18 WHEREAS, when Mary Jo's children grew to the right age, she star[ed back into the world of teaching by
19 working as an Aide with the Eazly Childhood Family Education program for six years; and
20
21 WHEREAS, in 1983, Mary Jo knew it was time to nzn her own program, so she started the Recreation for
22 Pre-Schoolers program at Edgcumbe Recreation Center with the City of Saint Paul's Parks and Recreation

Department; and
WHEREAS, Mary Jds goals for the program were to provide an inexpensive pre-school experience for
families with older children already in private school and to have children who graduate from the four to
five yeaz program to be self assured and academically ready for kindergarten; and
WHEREAS, Mary Jo is retiring from her teaching journey after 25 years as head of the Recreation for Pre-
Schoolers program at Edgcumbe Recreation Center, where she has been rewarded by watching children
grow in many ways and seeing the confidence on their faces; and
WHEREAS, Mary Jo's impact on the children at Edgcumbe Recreation Center over the years is
immeasurable in its scope and magnitude - her leadership making each day brighter, each day safer, and
each day simply that much better for children; now
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that far over two decades of dedication and leadership in our
community, that Wednesday, June 10` 2009 be hereby declared MARY JO CULBERTSON DAY in
the gre8t C1ty of Saint Paul, Mlnnesota. �� and Thursday, June 1l, 2009
