RESOLUTION
I WHEREAS, Dr. Meria Joel Carstarphen became the Superintendent of Saint Pau1 Public Schools in 2006 as one of
2 the youngest superintendents of a major metropolitan school district; and

4 WHEREAS, she has successfully managed an annual budget of 625 million dollars, 6,500 staff inembers, over
5 40,500 pre-K-12 students and their families at over 100 different learning sites; and

WHEREAS, despite budgetary cha]lenges to include state budget deficits and cuts, Dr. Carstarphen has prevai]ed by
forming partnerships with the business and philanthropic communities, developing a five year funding accountability
framework plan, and successfully managing a] 80 million dollar referendum campaign; and
WHEREAS, she has successfully demonstrated leadership in defining what students will need to achieve and
maintain success as adu]ts, has formed partnerships with both government and the community to ensure that all
children are given ample opportunity to grow and achieve to their highest potential, and has worked to provide a
premier education for all; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Carstarphen has accepted a position as Superintendent of the Austin, TX Independent School
District beginning in July of 2009, and although she will be dearly missed by Saint Paul students we bid her well
wishes on herjourney forward; now
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Saint Paul City Council does hereby proudly and publicly acknowledge
the outstanding achievements of Dr. Meria Carstarphen; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul Ciry Council affirms the aforementioned pride by proclaiming
Superintendent Meria Carstarphen to be a good will ambassador for the City of Saint Paul.
