Dillon, mayor - 1,Vhereas, Peter MacFarlane, then a resident of the City of Saint Paul,.and WHEREAS, Peter MacFarlane, then a resident of the City of Saint Paul, and the founder and Superintendent of the Union Gospel Mission and its branches, on April 3, 1958, in his 73rd year, was summoned from this life by Almighty God, after his extensive, prominent and consistently meritorious career in the field of Christian social work; and whereas for approximately fifty years his efforts were directed toward the inculcation of the religious and moral means of improvement of the less fortunate citizens of this City and.the alleviation of human stress and suffering; and WHEREAS, His demise has occasioned incalculable loss to the City of Saint Paul and its inhabitants, and a -great .sense of deprivation and grief to his surviving spouse and son, John Murdock, be it therefore RESOLVED, That the Council of the City of Saint Paul, in its own behalf and in behalf of the City of Saint Paul and its inhabitants, hereby takes and records cognizance of his outstanding accomplishments, in permanent attestation thereof, and extends sympathy and condolence to his bereaved surviving spouse and son, and authorizes and directs the City Clerk to provide for the preparation of a copy of this Resolution and the delivery thereof to the surviving spouse of said Peter MacFarlane, decedent, with all convenient speed. MINNESOTA 8 f i � �r s9 . 3, 15 S 9 Gospel_Mission Founder Dies Peter MacFarlane, 73, of 853 Mound, who built the Union Gospel mission and its branches in St. Paul into one of x the nation's largest Christian social -work in- stitutions, died late Thursday in Miller h o s pital frond the effects of . a Jiver ail- ment. Mr. Born at North - MacFarlane cote, Minn., on April 12, 1884, Mr. MacFarlane came to St. Paul to attend Macalester college and remain- ed here throughout his adult life. He was a student at Mac - alester in 1909 when the board of a new organization, "The Gospel'M,ission," asked him'to "fill in" while a superintendent was being sought. He was then asked to become the superin- tendent, and held the position until his retirement was made necessary by ill health in 1956. During his moire than 40 years with the St. Paul mis- sion, Mr. MacFarlane saw the .growth of the Institution from a rented store building to an influential force in the community, including the mission and Bethel hotel at Seventh and 'Wacouta; two boys' and girls'. clubs; s branch mission' on - the West, Side and & large summer. camp property on Snail lake. He was also a founder and past president of the Interna- tional Union of Gospel. Mis- sions.- His leadership in start- ing new missions in cities throughout the United States and Canada, during the past half - century gained him a place in "Who's Who in Ameri- ca." He was a member. of Central Presbyterian church, and Ma- calesier college conferred upon him an honorary doctor's de- gree in 1957. - I ` He is asurvived by his wife, 1 Nellie; a son, John Murdock, at St. Olaf college; four sisters, Geraldine and Mrs. B. F. Wooley, of St.' Paul, Mrs. An- gus Murray of Northcote and Mrs. Dan McKenzie of Hallock, Minn., and four brothers, Dan A Missoula, Mont., Russell of Newport, Mich., Ernest of Northcote, and John of Bins carth, Man.
