Bus Depot Farce: Sirs: Council members last week gave initial'approval to a.plan that would accept the 'Bus Depot as a gift for the., city# then pay. for the demolition of-the building, anddedioate its future use as,a memorial to William Hamme on the surface this appears to bean exoelldnt opportunity for our city to. get "something for nothing*,* -,On simple-analysis tiara apparent "something for nothing" ,urns into its usual burdein for the ordinary tax payer. The. `,d9mqX1tioa;cosV is the only .obvious •expense and that hasn't even been, deVro- a or published. The future upkeep is another, expense not mentioned: "Addy �o Zthe above the lose of tax ,revenue, and you oau readily see that this "gift" is generous but more than the taxpayers can afford to accept. Reoords show that the taxes on this parcel are about,$4,800 annually. Using this amount as an annual•deposit, adding S'j% interest, compounded quarterlys this will amount to a staggering $135.180 in,a short twenty years. Another way to look at-it is that the oi.ty` sells bonds, to -raise money. This' tax ($4;800) would pay back 'a $78,,000 bond at 491- interest in 25; years. If the'Hamm Building needs a better view, let them pay for it but don't ask the taxpayers to support then. • -If-, ano-thex memorial • -is •needed toy W}111.am- Hamm, let his heirs pay - for :'it - -onot -the -poor taxpayer.
