1 WTEREAS, Ruth Blackman, who passed away on September 13, 2009, was an important force in the
2 civic, cultural and baseball life of Saint Paul for four decades; and
3
WHEREAS, her many friends in so many wallcs of life will miss her greatly, and have left their comments
on her contributions to Saint Paul, to whit:
• Ruth worked for West Publishing Company on West Kellogg Boulevard downtown. Her co-workers
remember her as a"personality," as some one who couid "spice up any parry," and whose retirement party
was naturally a roast.
• Ruth was a resident of a downtown condominium. Her neighbors will remember her sharp wit, volunteer
spirit, and dependability. Ruth was active on the Capito]River Council and never missed any meeting about
her beloved skyway system. She was also a member of the Mayor's Advisory Committee on Aging,
• She was a long-time volunteer and patron of the Ordway Center, and several other arts and theatre
organizations. Her Ordway friends remember looking forward to her ready laugh, "especially when it was
accompanied by that little hint of mischief in her eyes."
• She was an avid outdoor baseball fan and would travel all over the country in search of open air baseball
games. Her friends remember her smiling face in the front of bus where she loved to sit and heckle the fans
behind her. She was a huge fan of the Saint Paul Saints.
• Ruth loved to ride on her son David's Harley to synagogue.
She shazed her considerable talents as a volunteer with wide array of civic organizations. One of her friends
said, " We will need many volunteers to cover that one woman's activities;" and
WHEREAS, Ruth had, in the words of another friend, "a signature spit-fire that you never got from your
standard issue little old lady" that could make every event a joyous one. She will be missed by everyone,
and impossible to replace in the civic life of downtown; Now Therefore
BE IT IiESOLVED, that Thursday, September 17, 2009 is deciared Ruth Blackman Day in the City of
Saint Paul, and that her example will inspire the rest of us to a Day of Service.
