W[-IEREAS, John ivor Mazshall began his rise to Saint Pau] legend on February 5'", 1979 in the storied MacalestervGroveland neighborhood
where he was bom to Bubs and Mary Marshall; and
V✓HEREAS, John spent his youth in the neighborhood leami�g to love the Saint Paul community, attending gade school at Nativity Of Qur
Lord and eventually high school at Saint Thomas Academy, where he excelled in many areas;
WHEREAS, after graduating from Saint Mary's College in Winona in 2001, Jolm decided that time well spent was time working for the Saint
Paul community where he grew up; and
WHEREAS, John quickly landed in the seat of Saint Paul government, sewring an intern position in September, 2001 in the office of Ward
Three CiTy Council Member Pat Harris; and
WHEREAS, John had immediate impact on the neighborhood, working with citizens on a wide range of issues and quickly establishing
himself as an efficien[ and affable wmmuniry advocate; and
WHEREAS, on March 4`", 2002, John attained the position of Legislative Aide to Council Member Harris, where he continued his efforts for
the neighborhood on a full-time basis, eaming a host of accolades from neighbors and organizations, to include being named to the
Neighborhood Honor Roll; and
WHEREAS, in addition to his work in City Hall and the positive outlook and service he has brought to the neighborhood, John has done many
great things for the communiTy, serving as a key member of the Serving Our Troops project — which has served over 3Q000 steaks to soldiers
and families since 2004, working on the Saint Paul to Manzanillo project where he drove the Bookmobile from Saint Paul to Manzanillo where
it now serves over 35,000 children, and serving numerous other projects across [he metro area; and
WHEREAS, for his work in the community and in City Hall, John was named one of Ten Outstanding Young Minnesotans for 2008 by [he
Minnesota Jaycees; and
WHEREAS, Sohn recentty departed the halls of the City Council to serve as Manager of Communiry and Local Govemment Relations for
Xcel Energy, where he will bring his commitme�t to service and his depth of knowledge to citizens throughout Ramsey CounTy and beyond;
now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, that the CiTy of Saint Paul commends John Marshall for his truly exemplary service to the communiTy, for the brigpt
outlook he brought to the halis of the CiTy Council, and for the unique difference he has made for so many; and be it
FINALLY RESOLVED, that the City Council of Saint Paul hereby declares Wednesday, July 23`�, 2008 to be
John Marsha[[ Day
