WHEREAS, the Mississippi River is among one of Saint Paul's greatest assets, and
WHEREA5, the Lafayette Bridge, Saint Paul's ]ongest bridge, spans the River, and connects the heart of our great
City with ow neighbors, and
WI3EREAS, bicycles are a recognized form of transportation ad should be accommodated as new transportation
facilities are built, and
WAEREAS, the City's Comprehensive Plan has as one of it's transportation goals to develop a safe and attractive
system of bicycle routes and facilities, integrated with other transportation systems, that serves the needs of
community, utility, recreational and touring bicyclists of all ages; and
WHEREAS, planning is now proceeding by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT} for a new
Lafayette Bridge crossing the Mississippi Rivar in Saint Paul, and Yhese plans presently do NOT include any
pedestrian or bike paths; and
WHEREAS, this bridge is part of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area (MNRRA), and under the
jurisdiction of the national Park Service; and
WHEREAS, pianning has been going on for years to have a pedestrianJbicycle trail on both sides of the Mississippi
River Cottidor, with connections across the River, and many sectiotts of this trail have been completed. Now,
therafore be it
RESQLVED, that the City of Saint Paul strongiy urges MnDOT to include separated bike and pedestrian paths on
the Lafayette Bridge; and be it
FINALLY RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Saint Paul City CQUncil encourage City staff to work with MnDOT on
the design of these paths, connecting them to the existing bike and pedestrian trails along the Mississippi River,
including Warner Road and Kellogg Boulevard, and integrating them into the regional trail system, further
enhancing our transpartation system.
