Dear Sir:
We�re unable to attend� a public hearing to be held tomorrow
in regard to the improving of Hamline Avenue from �elby
Avenue to Grand �venue. We are ogposed to such action if it
shall necessitate assessing our property for an improvemant
which shall benefit the� public only--not us. The traffic
increase on both Hamline and Fortland will make our location a �
less desirea�ale and safe one in which tq+rear our four small
children. Scores of Central High SchooT students will be us-
ing a sidewalk ad�acent to our property--a sidewalk we do not
need but for which �e will be expecte� to pay. A public ser-
vice would be prov�ded --at our expense.
�Ve heve already been greatly inconvenienced by the careless
work done in the removal of the house and garage at 1343
Portland. An open basement excavat�on has exis�ed since July,
� and still exists , �eopardizing the safety of all small neigh-
borhood children, incl�tding our own baby, age 23 months.
Wor�nen have rammed our backyard fence, breaking off posts ,
rooting out f�owers and shrubs, and le�t the lot littered with
empty tin cans and refuse , making our location similar to
liQing next door to a city dump.
By the time 1thi� work is completed� it would seem much more
feasible that the city make restitution to us f�r the undesir-
able living conditions created b� this construction work, loss
of many besutiful trees , and increase in traffic a�ter work is
� completed. It seems unfair that we should be egpected to pay
for this general disruption of a now quiet and pleasant neigh-
borhood.
