These people have been unemployed for long periods of time for various reasons and most of them have been ` forced to the relief rolls even though they have no desire to do so. President Kennedy has recommended to the Congress that the Federal Government immediately extend benefits to those who have or will have exhausted their benefits under the existing law. As far as we can determine there is wide bi- partisan support for this resolution in the Congress which is designed to carry out President Kennedy's wishes. The Congress is scheduled to consider this matter in the very near future. Therefore, I ask that the City Council consider the following resolution for passage. RESOLVED, That the St. Paul City Council urge our Minnesota Representatives and Senators in the Congress of the United States to support-pending Federal Legislation which will extend unemployment compensation benefits beyond their present - limits thereby granting much needed-aid to many 'of our citizens who have been unemployed for a long-period of time.
