RESOLUTION
CITY O�SAIN� PAUL, MINNESOTA
Presented by
3 WHEREAS, on a spring Saint Paul day in 1943, Malachy John Scanlon was born to
4 Dorothy and Malachy Scanlon, setting the stage for over a generation of service and
5 commitment to young citizens across the metro area; and
7 WI-IEREAS, the young Mal Scanlon quickly estabiished himself in Saint Paul, residing at
8 1287 Wellesley and attending Holy Spirit Grade School; and
9
lo W�lEREAS, Mal attended the great Cretin High School, where he played footbail, hockey,
i l and baseball, and lettered eleven out of a possible twelve seasons, and where, most
12 importantly, he met the wonderful Nancy Reusch; and
13
14 WI-IEREAS, in 1966, Mal and Nancy were married and had four equally wonderful
15 chiidren — Christine, Colleen, Dan, and Joe; and
16
17 WHEREAS, in 1964, Mal Scanlon began coaching football at Nativity of Our Lord Grade
18 School in Saint Paul, which was the beginning of a storied coaching career that would span
19 decades in Saint Paul and influence the futures of countless leaders and exemplary citizens;
20 and
21
22 WHEREAS, in addition to Nativity, Mal Scanlon's coaching career would include
23 Washington Senior High School, Johnson Senior High, his alma mater Cretin High School,
24 the University of Minnesota, and the University of Saint Thomas; and
25
26 WI IEREAS, after beating Saint John's as the Head Coach of the University of Saint
27 Thomas, Mal returned to Cretin High School, where he has anchored the future of this
28 important institution and paved the way for thousands of young people to succeed both in
29 the classroom and on the field of play; and

31 WHEREAS, Mal Scanlon has been a coach both on the field and off the field, taking active
32 roles in organizations and individuals which have had truly lasting impact within and well
33 beyond the Saint Paul community; and

WI�REAS, while Mal Scanlon's career in coaching and teaching has spanned over four
decades, his position as Saint Paul's Mentor will be rooted in our community, our families,
and our friends for decades to come; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, that Saint Paul officially extends its deep gratitude to Mal Scanlon for
his dedication to our community and his tireless efforts to teach young citizens the value of
team, community, and friendship; and be it

43 FINALLY RESOLVED, that Tuesday, October 14` 2008 be officially declared Mal
44 Scanlon Day in the great City of Saint Paul, Minnesota.
