O'Connell City Clerk Building Dear Madam: This is in the matter of the appeal of Macalester College. to establish a new building line set back on their property located on the west side of Snelling Avenue between Grand and Summit Avenues. The legal description is a miscellaneous one a copy of which is attached. Macalester College is planning several additions to their campus and in order to develop it the best way are asking for a building line set back of 43 feet from the Summit Avenue right - of -way and 15 feet from the Snelling Avenue rigbt -of -way. A request was also made to waive the Height Restriction, but a study of the proposal indicates that the proposed buildings are within the height regulations due to the large amount of open space on the block. Field investigation discloses no objection to the proposal as all of the proposed structures will be within the campus of the college and will not have a detrimental effect on the residences in the area. In consideration of the above factors, the Board of Zoning recommends the granting of the appeal to establish the building lines as above indicated. Sincerely, H. C. Wieland, G°( Secretary HCW :FGI Board of Zoning Encl. Z. F. 4971 OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT ` MACALESTER COLLEGE SAINT PAUL 1, MINNESOTA r The Honorable George J. Vavoulis Mayor, City of Saint Paul City Hall Saint Paul 2, Minnesota Dear Mayor Vavoulis: July 5, 1962 Macalester College is currently having plans drawn for the con- structing of student residence halls and a dining hall, within the next two years, at a cost of approximately $3, 000, 000. It is our hope that we can construct these buildings on the presently unused part of our campus that faces -on Snelling and Summit Avenues. In order that this can be done, we respectfully request of you and the Honorable City Council that the building lines for the proposed buildings on Summit Avenue between Macalester Street and Snelling Avenue and on Snelling Avenue between Summit Avenue and Grand Avenue be established as shown on the accompanying plans for this block under the provisions of Paragraph 64.03] of the Legislative Code. We also respectfully request that a variance to building height restrictions be granted from those required by Paragraph 61.02 of the Leg- islative Code for District No. 1 on Summit Avenue and Snelling Avenue so that the dining hall and men's dormitory may be located as shown on the accompanying plan. As you know, all of the property in this block is owned by Macalester College. For your .further information drawings are enclosed showing views from Summit Avenue looking south and from Snelling Avenue looking west, to illustrate the manner in which the new buildings will be integrated into our campus layout.
