WHEREAS., on the 3rd day of June., 1963., in his 81st year,
Pope John XXIII was summoned from this life by Almighty God
after'a pontificate which leaves a great mark upon world
affairig and which has resulted in recognition throughout the
world of Pope John as the Pope of Understanding and Peace; and
WHEREAS., during his long and meritorious career in high
offices of his Church, including that last high office of Pope,
he had achieved recognition and great distinction as Churchman.,
Statesman, and World Leader; and
WHEREAS, the death of Pope John has created profound
sorrow in the hearts of men of all faiths as a'rosult of his
loss t.o,the world; and
WHEREAS
., his demise has dccasioned incalculable sadness
and a great sense of deprivation and grief not only to the
members of the Catholic Church, but in the minds and hearts
of men of good will throughout the entire world; now, therefore.,
be it
RESOLVED, That the Council of the City of Saint Paul, in its
own behalf and in behalf of the citizens of the City, hereby takes
and records cognizance of the marvelously meritorious career of
Pope John XXIII., and in permanent attestation thereof, extends
sympathy and condolence to His Excellency Leo J. Binz, Archbishop
of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul, to the members of the clergy
and religious of said Archdiocese, and to all members of the
Catholic Church of this Archdiocese and hereby directs the City
Clerk to deliver forthwith to His Excellency Leo J. Binz a copy
of this resolution.

I acknowledge receipt of your letter of June 7 and the copy forwarded
therewith of the Council Resolution adopted that day on the occasion
of the death of Pope John XXIII; and I thank you for this transmission.
Also I beg you in turn to express to the Honorable Mayor and Council-
men my very deep appreciation for the sympathy and condolence
extended in their own name and on behalf of the citizens of St. Paul
to me, to my clergy, to the religious and to the members of our Church.
I value this resolution more than I can say. It is a noble part of the
world wide tribute of acclaim, given to good•P.ope John, and a symbol
of the tremendous good will he has elicited here and everywhere.
In expressing my appreciation I extend all good wishes to the Mayor,
to the Councilmen, to yourself and to all who are near and dear to
all of you.
