2 THE HONOI2ABLE ICCHO ITO, MAYOR OF NAGASAKI, JAPAN

4 WHEREAS, Nagasaki, Japan and Saint Paul, Minnesota have been Sister Cities for over 50 years and were on the
5 cutting edge such partnerships when on December 7, 1955, they established this relationship, the first-ever
6 partnership between an American ciry and one anywhere in Asia; and

8 WHEREAS, in 2005, Mayor Iccho Ito, Mayor of Nagasaki, hosted a Saint Paul Mayoral delegation to foster a
9 greater cultural and diplomatic relationship between the two cities; and

t i WHEREAS, in 1995, Mayor Iccho Ito hosted a delegation from the City of Saint Paul and its City Council on the
12 occasion of the 50` anniversary of the bombing of Nagasaki during World Waz II resulting from U.S. use of an
i3 atomic bomb; and

ts WHEREAS, Mayor Iccho Ito was known internationally for his work to promote world peace and traveled abroad to
t6 promote nuclear disarmament, as well as leading a coalition of Japanese cities calling for the elimination of nuclear
17 weapons; and

19 WHEREAS, Mayor Iccho Ito was tragically killed on April 18, 2007, by an act of violence uncharacteristic in the
zo peace-loving country of Japan; and

zz WHEREAS, this tragic act took place in the midst of an active campaign causing concern among Japan's leaders that
z3 freedom of speech and democratic process have been challenged in Japan's local elections; now, therefore, be it

z5 RESOLVED, the Mayor of City of Saint Paul and the City Council wish to express their deepest sympathy to Mayor
26 Iccho Ito's family and the residents of the City of Nagasaki in this time of great mourning and sorrow, and stand
2� firmly in support of the democratic and peace-loving people of Nagasaki.
