07-339Suspension Item - 4-11-07 �� RESOLUTION SAINT P�UL, M 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 30 31 32 33 Presented by Council File # �7-�� -�/ Green Sheet # 3�Q( /� WHEREAS, since the 1820s, railroads have played a central role in moving our Great Nation westward by providing a more efficient means of transporting goods and people from the east to the west; and WHEREAS, the infamous Jackson Street Shops were built in the 1870s just north of downtown Saint Paul and to this day represent the oldest railroad complex still in existence in the State of Minnesota; and WHEREAS, when the original roundhouse became too small due to the ever-increasing demand for more power, larger engines, and the growth of the railway under the direction of railroad tycoon, James J. Hill, a new 25-stall brick roundhouse was commissioned to be built in 1907 and located in the area known as "lower town;" and WHEREAS, the Jackson Street Roundhouse remained in continuous use by Great Northern Railway until 1959, undergoing many transformations; and WHEREAS, the Jackson Street Roundhouse was purchased by the Minnesota Transportation Museum in 1985, and WHEREAS, the Minnesota Transportation Museum, with funding assistance from both State and Federal gants, spearheaded multiple restoration projects over the course of fourteen years and dutifully returned this vibrant, historic, transportation gem to its current refurbished condition for all to experience; and WHEREAS, a true achievement to preserving Saint Paul's history was reached in May of 1999 when the Minnesota Transportation Museum opened the Jackson Street Roundhouse to the public as the Jackson Street Roundhouse Museum and Restoration Shops; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, in this year, 2007, after many ]ong years of service, change, and care, the Jackson Street Roundhouse is officially 100 years old; and THEREFORE, BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that in honor of its centennial, its 100 great years in Saint Paul history, and its role in heiping to develop and grow our State, our Country, and our great City of Saint Paul, today, April 13` 2Q07 is herby declared by the Saint Paul City Gouncil to be Jackson Street Roundhouse Day in the great City of Saint Paul.
