Dear Mr. Simon:
It-has been`called to my attention by Mrs. Jos. Robert Labore
that the hearing regarding. putting sidewalks on Ames between Ruth -
_ ,= and - Nokomis .is being_,heldT- uesday,- .March _26. ,
The Nokomis 'P. T. A. which- represents the parents and teachers .
of Nokomis School 'serving this area is concerned' about the safety and
welfare of all the children of the neighborhood. Certainly having
sidewalks available to eliminate-the hazard of children walking in
the street is- in the best interests of the children of this neighborhood.
The Nokomis P; T.. A. has been ',very active in its safety program this
_year. There has been inauguarated a system of having mothers assist
the school patroli-Provide more'adequate protection for children at
the busier intersections in the area.
The situation on Ames is undoubtedly, a greater problem now than
it was, before because of a new regulation-governing the depositing &'picking up
children. East bound, cars are all routed on Ames Avenue. A copy of
the bulletin explaining the plan to parents is attached. This plan
was- devised after a,conference involving the principal, Miss Maloney,
Mr-.-Williams, assistant Superintendent of Schools,.Lt. Ray Anderson
and Mr. Vern Peterson, St. Paul.Traffic Engineer.,
According to our records there are at present ten families with
eleven children who must walk on-this street to'get to and-from Nokomis r
school. There are other children who must use the street-in this block
who attend Ames and St. Thomas school.
An officer of the Lincoln Park Association has also brought,to my
attention a- report to the city council dated July 15, 1953,which was-
made-by a special-committee to consider*the•sidewalk problem in St. Paul.'
It is also attached-.
A regular meeting of the Nokomis P. -T. A. is.scheculed for the
evening of Tuesday, March 26. -If affirmative action has been taken
this can be anno6nced.a t that time. If for any reason action is =
delayed, the association would that evening have opportunity to
make ah` 6ificiaV,r' edommendation.
_Respectfully --subm tted,
