06-986Council File # 06- 986 Presented by_ Referred To Green Sheet # 3033952 Committee Date Whereas, Dorothea Burns was born July 15,1931 in Saint Paul to Gladys Parks and Arthur Hill of Kansas as the second of ten children; and Whereas, Dorothea attributes the support from her husband of 56 yeazs, Clifton Burns, Sr., her four children, two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren to her reaching her potential as an outstanding community leader; and Whereas, Dorothea's lifelong joumey began at the Hallie Q. Brown Center, in the early 1940's, where she was enrolled as an infant in the Hallie Q. Brown Center's Well Baby Program; and Whereas, Dorothea began her yeazs of dedication to Hallie Q. Brown as a volunteer Girl Scout leader and went on to become the first African American President of the Girls Scout Council of St. Croix Valley, where she dedicated 33 years as Boazd Member, serving six of those yeazs as Board President; and Whereas, Dorothea's love for mankind makes it no surprise that she has served with more than Fifteen organizations and given countless hours of service to civic and non-profit organizations throughout the City of Saint Paul and the Twin City Metro Area; and WLereas, Dorothea is a caring, energetiq and insightful woman who gives unselfishly from her heart; a woman that exudes confidence, honor and integrity, while leading a humble and dedicated life to volunteerism, her faith, family and friends; and Whereas, Dorothea is a testament to the legacy of the Parks Family, her Uncle Gordon, and to the Old Rondo community by propelling a passion for improving the lives of young people and the courage to look adversity in the face and continue to meet whatever challenges she encountered throughout life; and l�TOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul CiTy Council does hereby publicly recognize Dorothea Burns for her contribution and dedication to her community and city; and THEREFORE, BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Counci] does hereby proclaim Thursday, November 2, 2006 to be DOROTHEA SURNS DAY in the CiTy of Saint Paul, commemorating five decades of passion filled service to our community.
