06-941Suspension 10/04/2006 Council File # 06-941 Green Sheet # 3033315 RESOLUTION CITY OF Presented by MINNESOTA 1 RECOGIVIZING DISTRICT ENERGY, FOR T1�Ilt BEING NAMED TAE WINNER OF THE 3RD 2 ANNTJAL INSPIItING EFFICIENCY IlVNOVATION AWARD , � 4 WHEREAS, Disirict Energy St. Paul Inc. has created the "Green Energy" program, a large portion of which 5 consists of their combined heat and power facility; and 6 7 WFIEREAS, the combined heat and power facility has a goal to replace up to 80 percent of Disirict Energy's use of 8 non-renewable fossil fuels with the renewable energy of wood waste; and 9 10 WHEREAS, the combined heat and power facility turns 300,000 tons of annual urban wood waste into clean energy 11 that is provided to the consumers in the downtown area of St. Paul, including Minnesota's State Capitol Complex; 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 Requested by Depamnent of: :� Form Approved by City Attorney By: Adoption Certified by Council Secretary Form Approved by Mayor for Submission to Council BY� ' oiz BY� /IQrnGt,e I.���/ Approved by : ate �a— (� �_ =y: and WHEREAS, 80 percent of downtown businesses are heated by District Energy "Green Energy" program, including the Minnesota State Capitol, which is the nation's first State Capitol to be heated and air conditioned primarily by green energy; and WHEREAS, District Energy has had the vision, innovation and determination to provide renewable energy to St. Paul ]ong before green energy was fashionable, while continuing to provide reliable low cost energy to their customers; and WHEREAS, District Energy, their "Green Energy" program and the combined power and heat facility were recognized by the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (MEEA) for, according to MEEA president Alecia Ward, empowering "consumers and businesses with the tools and information they need to be more energy efficient" and WHEREAS, on September 28, 2006, at the 2006 Inspiring Energy Efficiency Awards, the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance named District Energy St. Paul the winner of the Third Annual Inspiring Efficiency Innovation Award. Now, therefore be it RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council recognize and honor the achievements of District Energy St. Paul and their "Green Energy" program.
