Finney, in 1970, fresh out of college, believed her chosen career was teaching; and WHEREAS, Linda, taught the children of migrant workers in Belle Glade Florida for two years; and WHEREAS, Linda, returned home in 1972, where there were no teaching jobs available and the resilient young woman decided to become a police officer as an interim measure until she could find a position as a teacher; and WHEREAS, fortunately for law enforcement, Linda decided that enforcing the law and helping people was what she was supposed to do. "I knew by the time I completed the academy that this was my career choice, and I decided to stay," she said; and WHEREAS, in 1973, Linda became a police officer in the Metro-Dade Police Department of Dade County, Florida, and for the next 25 years Linda has devoted her life to law enforcement; and WHEREAS, Linda quickly rose through the ranks of patrol officer and investigator, making sergeant in 1979; and WHEREAS, in 1983, Linda was appointed Police Commander and also promoted to Lieutenant and became the k}ig�esi-ra�k-it�g Af�ican-A�e�ie� wo�reve� to-serve �� the elepartment; and -- WHEREAS, in 1986, Linda relocated to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety; and WHEREAS, Linda, a decorated officer, has received the international Association of Women Police's Mentaring Award and was named Woman Officer of the Year by the Minnesota Association of Women Police; and WHEREAS, Linda has never stopped her initial chosen career as a teacher. She continues to teach law enforcement classes to the State's incoming officers at both Metropolitan State University and Concordia University in St. Paul, as well as around the Unites States; and WHEREAS, Linda is no stranger to personal tragedy. After surviving breast cancer, she added the cause to find a cure to her numerous community activities and, she never stopped working through her illness; and WHEREAS, in August of 2004, Linda was the first woman and woman of color to be appointed Superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the second superintendent in 70 years to be promoted to the post from within the organization. Beyond her credentials, she brought the important skill of bringing people together to solve problems; and WHEREAS, Linda has submitted her notice of retirement to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and will retire a decorated Public Safety leader on October 3, 2006; 06-905 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council does hereby recognize and congratulate Linda Finney for her outstanding dedication to the citizens of the State of Minnesota and City of Saint Paul; and THEREFORE, BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council does hereby declare that October 3, 2006 be forever known as HONORARY MAYOR LINDA S. FINNEY DAY in the City of Saint Paul.
