DECLARING OC'T�S�R 14, 2006, TO BE STEVE I�AMEL AND AIS NfARVELOUS RACE BIKE DAY
IN THE CITY OF SAINT PAUL
WIIEREAS, Steve Hamel is an internationaliy renowned motorcycle mechanic, whose business, Sterling Cycle
Works, is located in St. PauPs Frogtown neighborhood, and
WHEREAS, Hamel is widely known for his work with Vincent motorcycles; according to a recent Star Tribune
article, "he knows more about repairing and tuning them than anyone, anywhere," and has built a Vincent engine for
Biker Build-off Champion Matt Hotch to be featured on the Discovery Channel in late October, and
WIIEREAS, Hamel set his sights on motorcycle legend, Rollie Free, who in 1948, set a land speed record of
150313 miles per hour on a Vincent at Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats, wearing bathing trunks and lying prone on the
bike, and
WfIEREAS, in his St. Paul machine shop, Hamel reengineered a 1950 Vincent to challenge Free's remarkable
record on the Bonneville Salt Flats, and
'WHEREAS, on Sept. 6, 2006, Steve Hamel set the national land speed record in the 1,000 cc pushrod gas class, at
152.604 miles per hour, in a normal riding posture, surpassing Rolland Free's 1948 record; and
WIIEREAS, hauing shattered Free's record, Hamel's next goal is to pursue the 1967 Iand speed record of 183.586
by New Zealander Burt Munro on his 1920 "World's Fastest Indian" motorcycle; therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council honors the achievements of local businessman and national treasure,
Steve Hamel, and be it further
RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council declares Saturday, October 14, 2006, to be Steve Hamel and His
Marvelous Vincent Race Bike Day in the City of Saint Paul.
