06-549Council File # Q�- �4 q Green Sheet # ,3��D /�'' � � RESOLUTION PAUL, MINNESOTA Presented By ( "" �- -- ReferrectTo - - - -- - - - - - - - - - r -- -� ommifEee: afe 1 WIIEREAS, The City of Saint Paul has a rich and historic chazacter whose flavor is bui]t from many positive 2 facets including its qualiTy citizens, diverse and unique neighborhoods, and ara ably most important — its many 3 restaurants; 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 WHEREAS, Back in the 1940's, in the location of what would be one of Saint Paul's most storied restaurants, a classic corner business known as the Saint Clair Sweet Shoppe served up iu specialties of homemade candy and ice cream to a multitude of Saint Paulites : and WHEREAS, On Thursday, April 12, 1956, in the space of the former Saint Clair Sweet Shoppe, George and lohn Boosalis, armed with their recipe for open-flame broiled burgers, opened one of Saint Paul's landmazk restaurants, The Saint Clair Broiler; and WHEREAS, On that opening day of the Saint Clair Broiler in 1956, a young man and future owner of `The Broiler' washed dishes and made malts and sundaes; and WHEREAS, That young man was none other than Saint Paui native and neighborhood ]egend Jimmy Theros, who worked under the glow of the famous neon flames for nine long years, left to try his own restaurant ventures, and upon hearing it was up for sale, returned to his true love - The Saint Clair Broiler - which he purchased immediately; and WHEREAS, The Saint Clair Broiler has been a landmark business in Saint Paul's Macalester Groveland Neighborhood for over 50 years, serving quality food to families, neighbors, visitors, and students from numerous col]eges and high schools; now, therefore be it RESOLVED, that in honor of its 50 year anniversaty serving the great citizens of Saint Paul, Wednesday, June 14`", 2006, be Saint Clair Broiler Day in the great City of Saint Paul.
