and the-minimum qualifications for the various classes of
positions in the Classified Service of the City," '
approved February 13, 1935, as amended.
THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAINT PAUL DOES ORDAIN:
Section 1. That Ordinance No. 7607, approved February 13,
1935, as amended, be and the same is hereby further amended by striking
out the specifications for the title "Garbage Collector'?, and by substituting
in lieu thereof. the following statement:
This title abolished except as. to present incumbents. )
Section 2. That said ordinance, as amended, be and the same
is hereby further amended by striking out the title and specifications for
Chief Clerk (Receipts and Disbursements) and for Matron -- Health Bureau.
Section 3. That said ordinance, as amended, be and the same
is hereby further amended by striking out the minimum qualifications for
the following titles:
Assistant Supervisor of Street Maintenance

distribution of fuels and the regulation of bus operations; and to
perform related work as assigned.
Examples of work performed:
To investigate or supervise, the investigation of various problems
involved in the prevention and /or elimination of smoke and
related nuisances and make proper reports and recommendations.
To investigate or supervise the investigation and adjustment of all
complaints on smoke and related nuisances, on the violation of
fuel ordinances'' and on bus service and operation.

Examples of work performed:
With only the most general features of the work customarily
reviewed by a superior and with final responsibility for the
formulation of working plans and the devising or adaptation of
methods, and with individual responsibility for results of
broad scope- -
To supervise the testing of materials and equipment purchased by
the City, and to devise methods and to draw up specifications
for conducting such tests.
To cooperate with the Public Works Department to secure improved
paving materials; with the Purchasing Agent in preparing
specifications for the purchase of various materials; with the
Water Department on electrolysis and construction problems;
with the Public Safety .Department in tests of fire hose, fuels
and problems of safety; with the Board of Education in tests of
fuel and boiler efficiency.
To supervise gas inspections for the Department of Public Utilities.
To do professional research in problems of new materials for
paving construction.
Minimum qualifications:
College graduation in chemical, electrical or mechanical engineering,
or in chemistry, and eight years' professional experience in a
machine testing laboratory, three years of which must have been

Examples of work performed:
To drive a pumping engine to and from fires.
To place and secure apparatus at a fire, and to change the

To operate the pumping engine.
To keep the apparatus supplied with water, gasoline and oil.
To make working tests of apparatus when so directed.
To report any necessary repairs to superiors in ordor to
maintain the apparatus in efficient operating condition.
To operate the heating plant in fire stations.
After completing pumping operations, to assist in returning
the apparatus to service as quickly as possible by picking
up hose, equipment, etc.

Duties and responsibilities:

for the purpose of enforcing laws, ordinances, rules, and
regulations relating to fire hazards; to determine the causes of

Examples of work performed:
To inspect buildings and grounds for the purpose of eliminating
fire dangers and to insure compliance with fire regulations.
To note -tondition of fire alarm boxes and material stored in and
around buildings, and to report unsatisfactory or dangerous
conditions.
To inspect premises where oils or other inflammable goods are
;handled, stored or sold, and to inspect fire escapes.
To test fire hoses and fire - fighting appliances used in theaters
and other large buildings, and to inspect automatic sprinkler
systems and test - valves.
To give advice and instruction to owners and occupants of buildings.
To keep records and make reports.'
Minimum qualifications:
High school graduation and two years' experience in the position
