MS/hp 22 Very truly yours, City Clerks I>>,-A Rttg &as 17 � JCO pCRA�ON CC�NSE,� l 79,Dies Of Heart Attack in'South John Gilman Ordway; St. Paul businessman and finan- cier, died at 4 a, m. today of a heart attack in Palm Beach, Fla., where he had gone three weeks ago. `Mr. Ordway, whose St. Paul home is at 485 Summit ave., would have been 80 Thursday. He was a ii:ember of the board • of 3M company and chairman of the board of Crane Ordway Co. Mr. Ordway had served on the 3M board of directors many years, only William L. McKnight, chairman of the board, having exceeded him in length of service pn the board. Mr. Ordway was one of the trustees of the Ordway Trust, owner of 4,682,504 shares of 3M stock worth $327,775,000 at today's market price. HIS DEATH is the second this week in the top echelon of 3M executives. Archibald G. Bush, 78, chairman of the company's executive commit- tee, died Sunday at Winter Park, Fla., and his funeral was held today in St., Paul. t Mr. Ordway was born in St. Paul, the son of Lucius Pond Ordway, who founded the Crane Ordway Co. He was graduated from the St. Paul academy in 1904 and Yale university in 1907. He returned . to- St. Paul after his graduation and joined his father's company, in which he worked 50 years. He became president and dis- trict manager of the com- pany in 1947-. IN ADDITION to being ac- tive in business he took part many years in the cultural life of the Twin Cities com- munity and was a supporter of the St. Paul Civic Opera company and the Minneapo- lis Symphony orchestra. He was a director and past pres- ident of the Civic Opera com- pany and had been a director of the Minneapolis Symphony. association. He -was a golfer, hunter, fisherman, sailor and curler most of his life. Surviving are his wife, Charlotte; a son, John Gil-1 man Ordway Jr., St. Paul; JOHN G. ORDWAY four daughters, Mrs. Thomas Irvine, Pine Tree lake, Dell- wood; Mrs. 'Craig Wallace and Mrs. Jack Wright, San Francisco, and Mrs. Tassos Fonduras, Paris; a brother, Richard Ordway, St. Paul, and a sister, Miss Katherine Ordway, New York City; and 17 grandchildren.
