05-678� ! �� Council File # OS-678 RESOLUTION CITY OF SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA Presented Green Sheet # 3027465 WHEREAS, Lyle M. Pasket was bom and raised in Saint Paul attending Marshall High School, and; WI�REAS, Lyle Pasket joined the navy in March I945 and was assigned to the USS Indianapolis as an Aviation Store Keeper, and; WHEREAS, on 30 July 1945 the USS Indianapolis was struck by two Japanese torpedoes and sunk within 12 minutes of being hit, and; WHEREAS, Mr. Pasket then had to endure what has been called, "The worst tragedy at sea in our nary s history." This tragedy unfolded as follows: While almost 900 men were able to abandon ship, there were just a handful of rubber rafts. Most men clung to debris or utilized their life jackets while floating in the oil soaked water. Sharks began attacking at dawn and were a constant threat during the 5 days the men �-ere afloat without food and water. The navy didn't know of the sinking and sent no rescuers. The sailors were accidentally discovered by a planz on routine patrol for submarines. Of the 1197 men aboard the USS Indianapolis oniy 317 survived the ordeal; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council does hereby recognize and honor LyIe M. Pasket on this 60�' anniversary of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis and offer our most sincere gratitude for his willingness to serve his country and endure unimaginahle hazdships in her defense. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council also thanks Mr. Pasket for his many contributions to our community since his dischazge from the United States 1Vavy, and; BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council does hereb}� proclaim Friday, 22 July 2005 to be forever known in the City of Saint Paul as: LYLE M.
