1 WHEREAS, the duties of fire fighters in the city of St. Paul aze essential to protect the residents of our city; and
2 WHEREAS, as after September 11, 2001, the federal government committed to assisting municipalities with
3 funding to protect all citizens; and
4 WHEREAS, the federal government has made available grant funds through the Staffmg For Adequate Fire and
5 Emergency Response (SAFER) program; and
6 WHEREAS, these grants can be used to assist fire departments in paying the salaries of newly hired fire fighters
7 for 5 yeazs; and
8 WfIEREAS, the city of St. Paul and Ramsey County are in the process of consolidating our emergency
9 communications center, and there has been a commihnent to funneling the savings from this consolidation back into
10 public safety.
11 NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council encourages the Mayor and Fire Administrafion
12 to apply for these grants priar to the June 28, 2005, deadline so that the city can take advantage of these available
13 funds; and
14 BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that the Fire Admnustration report back to the City Council as to the status of
15 these grants.
