Assistant Valuation Engineer , 286 City Hall and Court House ' Dear Mr. Donovan: . This is to elaborate on our telephone conversation of last week concerning the present status of Fire Stations #1 and #6, as far .' as the Building Department is concerned. . These properties were surveyed by this department in early 1963 and • a recommerdation was made that immediate steps be taken to vacate ,, the buildings because they were considered sub-standard, unhealthy , and in dangerous conditions. This recommendation was apparently in- terpreted as a condemnation of the properties with the idea that they ' - must be wrecked. However, this department' s use of the word "con- demnation" is that because of specific defects in the building we . may proceed to condemn it in order to have specified corrections made - If it is determined that it is hot. practical to make specified cor- . rections, the buildings are then wrecked. However, when the speci£ied - corrections are made the .building could be restored to certain uses „ and the requirements of the •Building Code be met. . , - _ The following items are to be considered necessary in order to return . . the buildings, formerly housing stations #1 and #6i to. some other use: . , These items would be considered those necessary to meet the minimum , ` standards. Specific occupancies could well demand that more. correc- . . tions are made. . . . Fire Station #T, located at 425 Main Street: " ' , 1) Electrica. service should be rehabilitated as the present service ' consists of two 30-amp. main circuits, f ar below the minimum re- quirements for a building of this size. ; . , . , . , . .. .. , _ .. , . , . .. . : , : . . _ ,_ , . . . . " . . . . , , ` . Donovan, Assistant Valuation Engineer • Page 2 April 13, 1966 ' ' ' Fire Station #1 (Continued) 2) There is a crack in the first floor concrete slab across the . main entrance doors. This crack appears to have been caused by the improper placement of reinforcing steel. It wi.l be , necessary that this section of the floor be re-built: • Fire Station #E}, located at 124 E. Delos Street: . 1) ' The plumbing on the second floor is in very poor condition and • , must either be repaired or removed. 2) The second floor has badly sagged toward the front of the ' building, probably caused by improper framing when an existing - stairway was removed. It will be necessary that this section . of the floor be re-built. ' 3) The property must have the roof leaks repaired. - 4) The masonry parapet wal.ls extending above the roof line must be rebuilt as at the present time they are badly deteriorated and are not to be considered safe. .' When these items have}een corrected this department would give ap- proval for limited occupancy of the buildings. The second floor construction, originally designed for, a dormitory use, is not strong • ' „ enough to be used for warehouse floor loadings and would require ex- . tensive reinforcement before it can be put to any, but ].imited, use. Other repairs and correctioris that might be needed would be determined ' by an occupant, based on what 'use he intended to put' the building to. ' We hope that this info`rmation answers the questions that you have had . and if we can be of any more assistance, would you please contact this office. - . . , . . . . , , . , . - - ou t y, . . ,, - . , . ' b . e , .
